ED MADDOX PASSES AWAY AT HOSPITAL,
WAS FORMER CITY POLICE CHIEF, COUNTY SHERIFF AND BAKBER
Edward Maddox, 69, East Seminary Street resident, passed away at 7:30 Monday morning at the Putnam County Hospital. Mr. Maddox was admitted to the hospital Sunday afternoon. Death was the result of a heart attack.
The deceased was a former sheriff of Putnam County, a former Greencastle police chief and a barber for many years. As result of his official duties as well as his tonsorial profession, Mr. Maddox was well known throughout the community.
Mr. Maddox was born in Putnam County on January 26, 1890, the son of Charles W. and Helen Newgent Maddox.
He served as deputy sheriff and then as sheriff of the county from 1944 to 1948. He was city police chief during the administration of the late Mayor W. D. James. He was a member of the Gobin Memorial Methodist Church. He was also a Mason and a member of the Putnam County Scott. Rite and Shrine.
He is survived by the widow, Grace Potter Maddox; two daughters, Mrs. Judy Rosencrantz, Evansville, and Mrs Dema Morrison, Dayton, O.; three grandchildren, Diane and Susan Rosencrantz and Jimmy Morrison; a brother, Everett Maddox, Greencastle, and two sisters, Mrs. Lorena Detro, Greencastle Route One, and Mrs. Pearl Frank, Indianapolis.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Rector Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert W. Gingery will be in charge. The Morton Masonic Lodge will hold its services Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
