Greencastle, Ind – Graveside services for Hazel Day Longden, 96, a Greencastle civic leader will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorial services will be at Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church. Calling will be in the church after services. Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Longden died Monday. In 1916 and 1917, she was principal and a teacher of Latin and German at Royal Center High School. A 1916 summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa honor graduate of DePauw University, Mrs. Longden was Rector Scholar orientation speaker at DePauw for 12 years and was a member of the DePauw University Alumni Board. She was awarded DePauw’s Alumni Citation in 1956. Active in Girl Scouts, she was awarded the “Thanks” Badge by the Greencastle Girl Scouts Council in 1954 and a Bronze Statuette in 1962. She was a charter member, troop leader, director of the swimming program and past president of the Greencastle Girl Scouts council. A sustaining member of the Wabash Valley Council of Boy Scouts of America, Mrs. Longden was awarded an honorary plaque from Boy Scouts of America. She was the recipient of the Greencastle Kiwanis Club Distinguished Service Award and Hall of Fame Citation and was the first recipient of the Greencastle Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award. A director of the Putnam County Chapter of American Red Cross, Mrs. Longden was a member of its speakers bureau during WWII. She was a member, Sunday School teacher, youth superintendent and trustee of the Gobin Church. Mrs. Longden was a charter member of the Indianapolis Zoo and Putnam County Saddle Club. She was the don or of Putnam County Playhouse. Memorial contributions may be made to the church renovation fund or the Putnam County Playhouse. She was the widow of Grafton Johnson Longden. Survivors: daughters, Lucy Louise Webb and Rebecca Oliver; son Grafton Longden, Jr.; 7 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren.
