NEWTOWN -- Mrs. Cleo Kirkpatrick Longden, Fountain County native, died at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Putnam County Hospital, Greencastle. Mrs. Longden, 47, was admitted to the hospital on Monday. She is survived by her husband, Grafton Longden Jr. The couple resided at 834 Indianapolis Road, Greencastle, and were co-owners of the Terrace View Garden and Greenhouse. They had operated the firm for over 20 years. Born near Newtown on Sept. 12, 1921, she was the daughter of George and Ada Kirkpatrick. The mother survives and still lives north of Newtown. Mrs. Longden's marriage was solemnized on Aug. 1, 1943. The deceased was reared in Newtown, and graduated from high school here in 1939. She later graduated from Indiana Business College in Lafayette. Mrs. Longden was an active member of the Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church. Surviving besides the mother and husband are two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Buchanan of Rt. 1, Greencastle, and Patricia, who lives at home; a sister, Mrs. Imogene Butler of Los Alamitos, Calif.; two brothers, Robert Kirkpatrick of Veedersburg and Kenneth of Linden, and a grandson, Christopher Scott Buchanan. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Gobin Memorial Church. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Thursday at the Rector Funeral Home. --typed by Walt W

NEWTOWN, Ind. (CNS) -- Mrs. Cleo Longden, 47, of Greencastle, a former Newton resident, died at 8:30 p.m. yesterday (Oct. 23, 1968) at Putnam County Hospital there. She had been a patient since Monday. Born Sept. 12, 1921, at Newtown, she was the daughter of George and Ada Kirkpatrick. She was married Aug. 1, 1943, to Grafton Longden Jr., who survives. Mrs. Longden was a graduate of Newtown High in 1939 and attended Indiana Business College at Lafayette. She had been employed at Purdue University and she and her husband operated the Terrace View Gardens Greenhouse in Greencastle for 20 years. She was a member of Gobin United Methodist Church. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Buchanon of Greencastle and Patricia at home; her mother of Newtown; a sister, Mrs. Imogene Butler of Alamitos, Calif.; two brothers, Robert Kirkpatrick of Veedersburg Rural Route and Kenneth Kirkpatrick of Linden; and a grandson. Mrs. Cleo Longden, 47 of 1134 Indianapolis Road, died last night at the Putnam County Hospital following a brief illness. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jameson Jones officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Greencastle. Friends may call at Rector’s Funeral Home after 7 this evening. Mrs. Longden was born in Newtown and educated at Newtown High School and the Terre Haute Business College. For a time she was a secretary at Purdue University and in recent years assisted her husband in the operation of Terrace View Gardens in Greencastle. She was active in church and community affairs. She was a devoted worker in the Sunday School program of Gobin Church as teacher and superintendent and held several offices in the Women’s Society of Christian Service on both local and district levels. She was active in Girl Scouts, the Putnam County Hospital Guild and was a past president of the Putnam County Federation of Clubs. She was a member of the Federated Reading Club, Over the Teacups, and the Progress History Club. She was active in politics and had served as secretary of the Putnam County Republican Workshop. She is survived by her husband, Grafton Longden, Jr; two daughters, Mrs. Rick Buchanan of Greencastle and Patti Longden, a junior at DePauw University; a grandson, Christopher Buchanan; her mother, Mrs. George Kirkpatrick of Wingate, Ind; two brothers, Kenneth Kirkpatrick of Linden, Ind and Robert Kirkpatrick of Veedersburg, Ind; a sister, Mrs. Imogene Butler of Los Alamitos, Calif and several nieces and nephews. - kz
