LAYTON, James Perry

James Perry Layton was born in Putnam County, Indiana Nov 26, 1832, died at his home in Leon, Iowa May 25, 1903, aged 70 years 6 months and 29 days. The deceased was married to Miss Mary E. Cawthorn in Putnam County, Ind Dec 15, 1853 to whom were born 7 children, 3 having preceded him to the great beyond, leaving the devoted wife and four children to mourn his death. The surviving children are: Mrs. WH Albaugh of Leon; Fletcher Layton of Lincoln, Neb; James R of Cliff Rock, Wash; Fred C of El Reno, Oklahoma. In 1866 they came to Iowa and settled on a farm just south of Leon where he resided for a number of years, then removing to Leon and engaging in business being one of our most respected citizens. The funeral services were held at the ME Church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock conducted by Rev. IN Woodward, the interment being in the Leon Cemetery under the auspices of the Odd Fellows Lodge, of which he had been a member for many years. - kbz
