LAYNE, George

Source: Greencastle Daily Banner 4 Jan 1946 p 3

George Layne, the oldest child of William R. and May Jane Leonard Layne was born near Cloverdale Jan 29, 1866.  He departed this life a few minutes before midnight Dec 28th 1945 having attained the age of 79 years and 11 months.  When he was in his early teens the father died leaving a family of 8 children.  As he was the oldest child it became his duty and privilege to make a home and provide for his mother, brothers and sisters. This he did willingly and lovingly.  The responsibility for the family he felt even until his death.  Life in those days was hard and a boy must work long hard hours to provide a livelihood. To this home came a small cousin, Anna Leonard Mann and to this child also he became a big brother as well as provider.  He has spent his entire life in respected and honored by all earnest, helpful living and was men ?  He was quite industrious and thrifty.  His advice and council was sought by the family, friends and neighbors.  About a year ago his health began to fail, he underwent an operation from which he never regained his full strength.  Early last fall the family moved to Cloverdale to make the remaining years of their lives easier and more comfortable. But it was not to be.  After a week of intense suffering he passed away.  The mother died in 1934, a brother, Frank in 1929, a brother and sister died in infancy.  Of the once large family, one sister, Ruby and a brother, Alva remain at home.  Two brothers, Martin of Cloverdale township and Lawrence of near Stilesville, also survive.
