Burial services for Professor Silas Paul Jones, a member of the Modern Languages Department since 1946 were conducted Tuesday afternoon from Old Chapel. Burial was in the old College Plot at Vale cemetery. Professor Jones born in Green Castle (sic) Indiana died Saturday evening at Saint Clare’s Hospital shortly after suffering a stroke. During his eight years at Union he taught French, Spanish and German. Dr. Gordon L. Silber, chairman of the Modern Languages Department said of Prof Jones: “With his background in teaching, his love of books, high standards of scholarship and extensive travel abroad, Professor Jones will be greatly missed in the Modern Language Department.  While his later interest was in French, he had also taught some Spanish and German since coming to Union in 1946 and was the most versatile member of our department. His most important role however was as counsellor and friend to his colleagues, and in these and many other ways, he made a place for himself that we can never fill.”  Prof. Jones received his BA from DePauw University in 1909 his Master Degree from Columbia in 1927 and his PhD from Columbia in 1939. He also studied for a year at the Sorbonne in Paris. Before coming to Union, he was a large instructor at American and Germany secondary schools, a member of the faculty of ChingHua University in China and of Seth Low Junior College. Professor Jones was considered at expert on French prose fiction, was widely traveled and was a collector of rare books, manuscripts and prints. A sister and sister-in-law survive. – kbz
