Guy James, colored, 52 years old, died at the soldiers home in Marion, Monday morning at 10:27 o’clock.  Mr. James had been confined in the hospital for the last five months, but had spent most of his life in Greencastle. Surviving are the mother; one daughter, Mrs. Kimmons, Indianapolis; three sisters, Mrs. William Herring and Mrs. Eunice Rickard of this city and Mrs. Albert Lord, Indianapolis; two brothers, Ollie James and George James of this city. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 o’clock at the AME Church with Rev. Benson of Indianapolis in charge.  Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery. – kbz

Note: Guy’s mother was Catherine; daughter Jessie Hallie.  Guy worked as a porter at a saloon and barbershop in Greencastle.  He played on a local baseball team the Coffee Coolers.  His father, Wyatt was born a slave in Alabama and made his way north.  He served in the 24th Infantry in Cuba and the Battle of San Juan Hill, being the first African American group there.  RIP Guy.  (and thanks to Jordan Vaughn and his wonderful FB page, Military History of Putnam County).
