JACKSON, Eliza Ellen Chritsty

Eliza Ellen Christy Jackson

Eliza Ellen Christy, daughter of John B. and Cornelia E. Christy, was born June 3, 1851, at the old Christy homestead, northeast of Greencastle, where the aged father still resides at the ripe old age of four-score and ten, the mother having passed away March 15, 1908.

On the 22nd of November 1871, she was united in marriage to John Jackson, son of Andrew and Harriet Jackson, deceased. To this union were born three children: Cora A., wife of George Mason, Guy D., and Charles Clifford. Mrs. Jackson united with the Christian church at West Union during a series of meetings conducted by Elder Warren, in 1868. Being of a gentle, unassuming disposition, she lived a humble, exemplary life, one truly devoted to her husband, her children, and her home.

A few months ago, she submitted to a surgical operation for the removal of cancer. While this may have prolonged her life for a few days, the disease had reached a stage where surgery could only arrest its progress for a time. For the last seven weeks she had been a constant sufferer, being unable at times to make known even her slightest wish.

Those who watched her slowly drifting down into the valley of death felt that, could she have spoken of her hours of most intense suffering, she would have expressed herself as having no fear of death, but rather would have desired death's welcome as a sweet release from pain. But the end came as the evening shadows were lengthening into the night, July 22, 1911 and at the age of 60 years 1 month and 19 days she fell asleep to awaken beyond the shadows where no tears are ever shed.

Surviving her are the husband, children and eleven grandchildren; also five sisters: Mrs. Susan Gibbons, Mrs. Mary A. Siddons, Mrs. Maggie Siddons, Mrs. Louisa Gorham, and Mrs. Cornelia Vice, and three brothers, James L., John H. and Columbus. One brother, Squire W., and one sister, Sidney J., died some years ago.

The funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church by Rev. W. H. Brown, and her body laid away in the Fillmore Cemetery on Monday July 24, 1911.
