Source: Greencastle Times News 6 Sept 1934 p 5

Funeral services for Bertha F. Hyten were held at the Chastain Funeral home Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock. The services were in charge of Dr. Ford, superintendent of the Greencastle district of the Methodist church. Mrs. Lillie Call and Mrs. Ruth B. Dodd sang three selections: "The City Four Square,” “In the Garden," and "Songs in the Night". The floral offerings, which were many and beautiful, were carried by Marjorie Call, Maxine Worick, Mrs. Vera Crawley, Pauline Smith, Sara Hatfield, Modlin Hatfield, Viola Grider, Helen Rogers, Lois Green and Geraldine Smythe. The pall bearers were: Andred Sidener, Otis Stark, Raymond Crosby, R. C. Smythe, Harvey Britton and W. A. Call. Interment was made in the Ladoga cemetery. On some blest morning a life comes into being, on some high noontide it reaches the peak of its usefulness, and on some peaceful evening, often before the shadows lengthen, it seeks that well-earned rest from its labors but the works live on. Bertha F. Hyten was born in Parkersburg, Ind., Nov. 22, 1870, and passed peacefully to rest on the afternoon of Aug. 18, 1934. Her parents were Dr. W. H and Malinda Goodbar Hyten, both of whom have passed from this life. Bertha was a member of a family of nine children: five sons and four daughters, three of whom have preceded her in death. Those living to mourn her passing are: Wm. L. Then, Roachdale; Tillman Hyten, Ladoga; Mrs. Clay Goff and Mrs. Effie Owens, both of Russellville and Miss Cora Hyten who shared her home.  Twelve nieces and nephews also survive.  In her early girlhood she united with the Methodist church at Raccoon, later moving her membership to the church of the same denomination at Roachdale, when she came to reside here. In her Christian life as in her secular life, she was frank and un retentious. She believed firmly in the teachings of her church and lived up to them to the best of her ability. For a number of years she was an able teacher of an adult class in the Sunday school. She stood firmly for the right In the face of any opposition. The cause of temperance has lost a staunch supporter in her passing.

For more than thirty years she taught in the public schools of Montgomery and Putnam counties and in the minds and hearts of scores of boys and girls, many of them now grown to manhood and womanhood, she implanted principles of truth and right living. It is not possible to estimate the influence of precept and example in the lives of the young. She became seriously ill some nine weeks ago and although professional skill and tender nursing did their utmost, they could not overcome the disease. She suffered intensely at times. During her last days she seemed to realize that life was drawing to a close and was willing and anxious to go. The day before her last on earth she said to her sisters and to the devoted friend, Hallie E. Sidener, who so faithfully cared for her, “I am so happy.” So has passed another life a life that will be missed in the family, in the community, in a wide circle of friends. Her smile and kindly word, her genial sense of humor and her good judgment were outstanding traits of character which endeared her to those who knew her. She held the bond of friendship very high. No friend ever found her wanting when the test came. We have suffered loss in her passing but to her it has brought eternal gain.  “And I heard a voice from Heaven saying unto me, Write. Blessed are the dead, which die in the Lord from Henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them.  Wish to express our heartfelt thanks to all those who so kindly assisted by words and deeds in the illness and burial of our dear departed one, Bertha Hyten. To the neighbors, Dr. Stroube, Dr. Lidikay, Mr. and Mrs. Chastain, Dr. Ford, the singers and all friends whose kindness was unfailing we give our deepest thanks. For the beautiful floral offerings – gardens of sweet memories – we express our deepest appreciation – Miss Cora Hyten; Mrs. Effie Owens, Mrs. Clay Goff, Mrs. Florence Hyten; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hyten; Mr. and Mrs. Tillman Hyten;  nieces and nephews. - kbz
