His life has been one of public service, he first served three years as deputy county recorder, then three years as deputy auditor under George M. Block, making an excellent record in these capacities. Later he engaged in fire insurance and built an extensive patronage. This work he was still doing when his health failed. In 1902 Mr. Hurst was elected county auditor, serving four years. It was during his term in office that the present court house was built. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1908. He graduated from the district schools and attended DePauw University. Mr. Hurst became known to nearly everyone in the county during the world war when he was made county chairman of the second, third and fourth Liberty Loan Drives. He worked tirelessly and all three projects were over subscribed. Mr. Hurst married twice, first to Louella Walker in 1887. She died in 1895. In Sept 1905 he and Miss Pauline Blake were married, her death occurring less than two months before the death of her husband. The deceased was a member of the Methodist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Surviving are three sisters: Mrs. Oscar Lane of Wichita, Kansas; Mrs. Rowena Smith and Mrs. Josephine Gardner of Indianapolis and several nieces and nephews. Although Mr. and Mrs. Hurst did not have any children of their own their life was devoted to their niece now Phoebe Conley Dietrich of Indianapolis and Blake Conley of Hagerstown who made their home with Mr. and Mrs. Hurst following the death of their parents. --- transcribed by kbz
