The Terre Haute Gazette of Thursday last published the following obituary of Peter Hughes, father of Treasurer-elect George W. Hughes of this county. Peter Hughes, an old and respected citizen father of Levi Hughes, County Recorder died at his home on South 16th Street at 11 o’clock last night, aged 77 years 7 months. He had been ill since 5th of July last. Deceased was born in County Tyrone, Ireland Dec 28, 1815 and was a son of George and Mary Dennis Hughes. His parents lived in County Tyrone until 1824 when they immigrated to NY where they died. Mr. Hughes was one of the pioneer settlers of Vigo County having come here in 1833 and worked at his trade, stone cutter and stone mason for the government for some time. He came here to help build the old government national road and after the work was completed decided to locate in this county permanently. He resided in Lost Creek Township until 1870 when he moved to this city., Mr. Hughes was married March 21, 1839 to Miss Ellen Dickerson daughter of Samuel Dickerson of Ohio and from this union 13 children were born, 9 of whom together with Mrs. Hughes survived him. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes celebrated their Golden Wedding in 1889. Mr. Hughes was a man of sterling qualities a kind husband and loving father. His death will be regretted by all who knew him. The children of Mr. Hughes still living are: George W, Greencastle; Sarah More, wife of Charles Moore, Trustee of Lost Creek Township; Rachel Ripley widow of the late Sanford Ripley; Levi G. Hughes, County Recorder; John H Hughes of San Francisco; Martha Herbert, wife of Isaac (>?) Herbert, deceased; Emma P. Hughes; Stephen C. Hughes and Rella Soules, wife of Oscar L. Soules. The funeral occurred Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the family residence on South 16th Street.
