The death of William Morton Hicks, age 90 years one of the oldest pioneer residents of Putnam County occurred at his home on the National Road, one and one-half miles east of Mt. Meridian Friday morning at 2:15 o’clock of influenza-pneumonia. Mr. Hicks was one of the pioneer residents of Putnam County coming to this county with his parents from Kentucky when he was a young boy. His entire life had been spent along the national Road in the vicinity where he died. He was born in Kentucky Jan 24, 1838. Mrs. Hicks, his wife who is 88 years old is also critically ill of influenza and her death is expected momentarily. The aged couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at their home in October. Besides the widow, 7 children survive. They are: Mrs. Sarah Broadstreet, Coatesville; Mrs. Tilman Ruark, Stilesville; HH Hicks, Marion township; Mrs. William Coble, Stilesville; Everett Hicks, Stilesville; Thomas Hicks at home and Edgar Hicks of Stilesville. Another son, Dr. Leora Hicks died in an army camp in 1918 of influenza. No funeral arrangements had been made Friday because of the critical illness of Mrs. Hicks. Interment will be in Stilesville cemetery, however.
Note: Bethena Dobbs Hicks, his wife was born in Putnam County 9 Sept 1840 and died on the 31st of December 1928.
