Sigma Chi Hall, June 4th, 1870 the following resolutions were passed by the members of XI Chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity on the late death of AL Herod, who was a member of that order. Whereas, the Creator has seen fit to take from our circle one whom we esteemed as a worthy Brother and a man of honor, be it … Resolved, that in Brother Herod we recognized those qualities of character which united him in feeling and interest to our welfare, and which required at our hands the strongest ties of brotherhood.  He was at once so courteous, so equable in disposition and so manly in his bearing toward other men, that we could only admire and love him; and while his acts of goodness are enshrined in our memories, we feel indeed that one place is vacant, one voice is hushed, one step is stilled never more to cross the threshold of fraternal union.  Resolved, that while we mourn the loss of one so happy in years and so hopeful for the future, and wonder at the sever dispensation of providence, we meekly submit to the chastening hand of Him who doeth all things well.  Resolved that, in regard for his memory, the jewels of the fraternity be draped in mourning for a period of 30 days.  Resolved, that a copy of these resolutions be sent to the parents of the deceased in token of our sympathy with them, and also that they be inserted in the Putnam County papers.
