HASTY, Jonathan - 1916

JONATHAN HASTY

Source: Herald-Democrat, Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana 21 Jan 1916 p 6

Jonathan Hasty, son of Levi and Minerva Hasty, was born in Putnam County, Indiana Nov 7, 1852. While yet very small his father's house was destroyed by fire and Jonathan's mother and little sister were burned to death.  The loving father and two children, Jonathan and his little sister Lydia escaped. His father was later married to Sarah Carpenter, who took the place of mother to Jonathan and his sister.  He grew to manhood on the farm with his father, always assisting in the work on the farm as a dutiful son should.

Sept 25, 1878, he was married to Sarah King, with whom he lived happily until his death. With the exception of about two years which he lived in Kansas his life was spent in the neighborhood of where he spent his childhood days. About 25 years ago Jonathan and his wife moved to the farm which was their home at the time of his death.
The place then was almost a wilderness but in industry and thrift and honest dealings with others they builded  (sic) up a home winch is one of the best in the neighborhood. Jonathan was an honest, industrious man, a good citizen, an example of which the young men may do well to try to imitate.

Although he never united with any church he was a firm believer in the doctrine of grace as taught by the Old Pedestrian Baptist.

The last few months Uncle Jonathan had been failing in health but he went about the duties of the farm until about four weeks ago when he had to give up his labors and remain in the house.  The physician found he was afflicted with that dreaded disease anemia, and all that physicians, neighbors, relatives and a loving companion could do was done for him but at 11:30 p.m. Dec 12 they had realized they must submit to the gracious will of Almighty God and he gently fell asleep in Jesus.  Although it grieves us to lose such a good and loving companion and so good a citizen, we must think of our loss as his eternal gain.

Although his father and only sister preceded him to the beyond, he leaves to mourn their loss his faithful companion, one half-brother, Perry, and four half-sisters, Minerva Brown, Eve Thomas, Rebecca Aker and Martha Aker, and a host of nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends .. . --- kbz
