Mrs. Lavinah Hartwell died at her
home in Gaylord, Kansas March 9, 1898 aged 70 years 7 months 10 days. Lavinah Stockwell was born in Putnam County,
Indiana July 29, 1827. She became a member of the Christian Church at the age
of 13 years and remained a faithful member of that church until her death. She
was married to George G. Hartwell, Jan 25, 1844. Four children were born to them, three sons
and one daughter. Two sons survive her and were present at her death bed. The
Hartwells were among the first settlers of this county, having located on the
homestead where they have resided since in 1871. About six years ago Mr. Hartwell died from
injuries received while caring for his stock, since which time Mother Hartwell
and her sister, Miss Abigail Stockwell have continued to reside on the farm
until last fall, when they moved to town. Mother Hartwell was one of those good
women, of whom it is said, “They do good and not evil all the days of their
lives.” She was an exemplary Christian, at rue wife and mother and faithful
friend. The good example of her life is not lost, but remains to guide the feet
of others along the path of love and duty. The funeral was held Friday
afternoon at the house and was largely attended, Rev. JM Allen preaching the
funeral sermon and the body was laid to rest beside that of the husband in
Gaylord Cemetery. Card of Thanks – We
desire to return heartfelt thanks to the friends and neighbors for their
assistance and sympathy during the illness and death and burial of our beloved
sister and mother. May God reward you for your thoughtful kindness. .. Abigail
