John E. HARRIS, a respected citizen of this place, who has been ill for many months of cancer of the stomach, died Wednesday noon. His pastor, the Rev. J. A. SPENCER, of the Christian church has kindly contributed the following:

John E. HARRIS departed this life at his home in Bloomfield at 1 o’clock p. m., Wednesday, February 12, 1908. He was born at Manhattan, Putnam County, Indiana, April 16, 1835.

He was married to Miss Frances WOOLEY, November 13, 1859. He is survived by his wife and four children—five children having preceded him to the grave. His surviving children are Mrs. LeRoy WILKIE, Mrs. O. P. SLINKARD, Bloomfield; Mrs. R. D. RHODES, Mangum, Oklahoma; and R. W. HARRIS, Linton. Besides three brothers, Lawrence HARRIS, Worthington; Lloyd HARRIS and Ivan B. HARRIS, Chicago; and one sister, Mrs. M. MARKLE, Clay City, survive him.

Mr. HARRIS after his marriage lived at Bowling Green, except two years spent at Spencer, until he came to Bloomfield, about twenty-five years ago, since which time he has lived here. After coming here he conducted a livery stable for two years, but gave it up to conduct a hotel. Afterwards he abandoned the hotel and then farmed till declining health forced him to retire. Since the fourth of last July he had been confined to his home by sickness. He was a great sufferer, but he patiently and uncomplainingly bore his affliction. He possessed many noble traits of character. His industry integrity, honest, truthfulness, humility and manliness made him hosts of loyal friends who highly esteemed him for his devotion to the highest principles of life.

He was a member of the Christian church for forty years, during which time he was consistent, faithful and loyal to the church, his brethren and his God. All that his devote wife, children and other relatives and medical skill could do was done for him. The funeral services will be conducted from the Christian church Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Interment in Bloomfield cemetery.

May the Lord greatly comfort, sustain and keep his most faithful wife, devoted children and their loved ones to a glorious reunion in heaven.
