George Washington Hanna, 84, passed away quietly at his home on west Walnut Street Monday morning at 10 o’clock after serious illness of ten months’ duration.  Mrs. Hanna preceded him in death by four days, being summoned last Thursday.  Mr. Hanna was born in Waveland on Dec 3, 1844. He lived on a farm in Montgomery County until he was 15 years of age. He offered his services to his country at the outbreak of the Civil War but was refused on account of his age.  On Dec 5, 1854 (sic – should be 4 Dec 1865 in Putnam) he was united in marriage to Mary F. Nelson and to this union were born three daughters Cora who died in infancy; Hallie who died at the age of 11 years and Nellie G who became the wife of Ora Tustison and whose death occurred on June 8, 1918. In 1866, Mr. Hanna located on a farm near Morton where he spent six years. He then engaged in the mercantile business at Morton for 15 years and then purchased a farm at what is known as the Hanna Crossing, ten miles north of the city at the intersection of State Road 43 and the Ocean-to-Ocean Highway. 20 years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Hanna moved to their home on west Walnut Street in this city. The deceased was always active in public affairs and was appointed as one of the commissioners that had charge of the erection of the present court house here in 1904. He took great interest in Republican politics, and for some years, served as trustee of Clinton Township.  In 1895, he was elected to the lower house of the Indiana Legislature.  He served two terms as member of the Advisory Board of Monroe Township and was secretary of the temperance organization which had charge of the campaign for local option in January 1909.  He was also president of the Putnam Civic Union.  He was always foremost in upholding all moral causes and was a citizen without reproach in all walks of life.  He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and a Knight Templar. The funeral for this distinguished Greencastle citizen will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock from the Brick Chapel Church  Dr. C. Howard Taylor will have charge of the services. Interment will be in the Brick Chapel cemetery. -kbz
