Greencastle – James M. Hammond, 65, Greencastle, retired superintendent of South Putnam schools died Tuesday. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Greencastle Christian Church of which he was a member. Calling will be from 4-8 p.m. today in Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home. Mr. Hammond had been superintendent of South Putnam 16 years retiring in 1991. Previous he had been the principal six years of South Putnam HS near Greencastle. He was the superintendent of Mill Creek Community Schools 1965-1967.  Mr. Hammond has been principal at schools in Amo, Cascade, Fillmore and Stilesville. Before becoming a school administrator he had been a teacher and coach for schools in Belle Union, Clayton and new Winchester. Mr. Hammond was an Army veteran and taught at the Army Education Center in Munich, West Germany 1951-53. He received his bachelors and masters from Indiana State University. Memorial contributions may be made to Crisis Pregnancy Center of Putnam County of which he was president of the board of directors.
