Lowell S (Larry) Hamilton, 82, Birmingham, Ala passed away Saturday following a long battle against heart disease.  He was born in Greencastle, the son of the late Judge Fay Stuart Hamilton and Lillian Bailey Hamilton, a native of Bedford.  

He attended DePauw University and completed his undergraduate education at the University of Alabama, later obtaining a law degree from Birmingham School of Law.

Mr. Hamilton was director of the Alabama Mental Health Association and also served on a volunteer basis with the United Cerebral Palsy and Association for Retarded Citizens organizations.  He was also active in volunteer programs to improve the environment.

Mr. Hamilton was considered instrumental in bringing an end to "warehousing" of mentally retarded people in institutions.

He was a brother of Mary Glenn Hamilton; Louise L. Middleton and Francis N. Hamilton, all of Greencastle.

He is also survived by his wife, the former Virginia VanDerVeer of Birmingham; a daughter, Carol, Berkeley, Calif and son, David VanDerVeer Hamilton, Tuscaloos, Ala.  At 3 p.m. memorial services will be held Tuesday at the Independent Presbyterian Church of Birmingham where Mr. Hamilton had served as president of the Senior Men's Club. - kbz
