Grogan - Julia Atherton - Putnam

Julia Atherton Grogan was born in Shelbyville, Kentucky May 16, 1837 and departed this life November 26, 1911 being 74 years 6 months and 10 days of age at the time of her demise. She was the daughter of William Atherton and May Lyon Atherton who were both natives of Shelbyville, Kentucky and came to Greencastle in 1849. Mr. Atherton entered the War of 1812 when a mere boy and served until its close. He was captured by the Indiana taken to Canada where he remained a prisoner for 16 months, finally making his escape and after untold hardships reaching his home in Shelbyville, where he entered the Methodist ministry and continued in its duties until the infirmities of old age compelled him to retire. The subject of this sketch came with her parents to Greencastle in 1849 and lived in the city continuously until the time of her death.  Mrs. Grogan received her early education in the Mrs. Tevis School for Girls in Shelbyville, afterwards she attended the Female Seminary in Greencastle and a school for girls at Indianapolis. She joined the Methodist Episcopal Church at the early age of 12 and remained a faithful and devoted member the remainder of her life.  She was married to William R. Grogan, Sept 22, 1863.  To this union were born one son, William A. Grogan of this city and four daughters: Gertrude who died at the age of ten years; Bessie M. Grogan and Emma L. Miller of Greencastle and Grace P. Wiseman of Altamont, Ill.  Mrs. Grogan left surviving her in addition to her husband and four children, four grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn the loss of a good Christian wife and mother and friend whom to know was to love.
