GRIMES, Joseph - Putnam

Joseph Grimes, an aged and well known citizen of this city, died this morning about 8 o'clock at his room in the Ramsey- Somerville block, on No. Green St. of inflammation of the stomach. He has been in failing health and had been for the past 3 years. For several years he had a shop over what is now the Dairy Lunch room. Before coming to Crawfordsville he was in the tailoring business at Waveland, Waynetown and other small towns. Mr. G. was 81 years old, having been born in Ky, Aug 23, 1826 and moved to Indiana four years later and settled with his parents on a farm located in the SW part of Montgomery Co, just No. of Russellville. Here he toiled on his father's farm until he was 17 when he tired of farm life and learned to be a tailor. He followed the tailoring business until 3 years ago. At the age of 14 he signed the "teetotallers pledge." He never broke his pledge. A few months after joinging the temp. forces he joined the Meth. Church and remained a member until he died. He was a class leader in his Church for 35 years and taught in the SUn. school for more than 2 decades. Mr. Grimes was married. to Jane Eliz. Sampson on May 22, 1846, with whom he lived happily for more than half a century. She died in June 1897. To this union were born 10 children, 5 of whom passed away before their father. One of his children was Gee Grimes, the well-known horseman who died a year or so ago at his home in Parke County. There are 5 children, who are still living. They are John Grimes and Taylor Grimes of this city, Samuel Grimes of Brazil and Mrs. Will Henkle of Indianapolis. The funeral will occur on Sunday at half past 2 o'clock at the home of Taylor Grimes and will be conducted by Rev. ED Smith, pastor of the First Methodist Church. interment will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery   --- typed by kbz
