GOOSEY, Frank - Putnam

When it came to reminiscing about his childhood jolly Frank Goosey, 97 former Indianapolis resident always had one quit: “I heard the Civil War go by.”  He was only a tot at the time of the war, but he heard enough from older folks to know fear when such terms as “Morgan’s raiders” were used. He was in a field playing with his sister when the sound of approaching horses was heard. “Oh, it’s Morgan’s raiders,” exclaimed his sister. He fell forward in the grass and remained there hidden while the horses galloped by.  Also vividly in Mr. Goosey’s memory was the day news arrived about Lincoln’s assassination.  Mr. Goosey died Sunday in the home of a granddaughter, Mrs. Robert Thatcher, Pittsboro.  Born in Powell County Kentucky, Mr. Goosey lived about 20 years at 916 Prospect here going to Pittsboro in 1938. For many years Mr. Goosey was a section hand on the Monon Railroad at Bainbridge. When he came here he was with the Indianapolis Union (Belt) Railroad.  Mr. Goosey was a Democrat.  He had the fire and determination of his Scotch Irish ancestry and was firm in his conviction.  He had voted for 19 Democratic presidential candidates. Often he recalled the early torchlight parades and camp meetings. He always kept up on current events and news of political activities. Mr. Goosey talked about the old days of farming when grain was planted and harvested by hand. When he retired at 70 from railroading he took up care of stock and gardening on his granddaughter’s farm.  Mr. Goosey never saw a football game, but became interested in the sport via television.  In 1947 Mr. Goosey’s wife, Sarah Carter Goosey died. She was a member of a pioneer Putnam County family and the two had been married 63years. Services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the Thatcher residence with burial in Crown Hill Cemetery here. Survivors are two sons Herb and Othie Gossa, stationary engineers; a daughter, Ethel Huntly; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
