The death of William H. Gerwig, father of the bride, cast gloom over a romance of the war that started at Camp Meade and culminated in the marriage of Miss Edna Gerwig of Pine Orchard, Howard County and Elmer H. Hurst of Detroit, Mich. Miss Gerwig who is a graduate nurse of Hebrew Hospital was stationed at Camp Meade and nursed back to health the young man who is now her husband. Young Hurst was a member of the 23rd Engineering Corps and after his recovery went to France. Subsequently Miss Gerwig was detailed to an English hospital and they corresponded. By a strange coincidence, Hurst and Miss Gerwig returned to this country on the same transport after the war was over and on Feb 5 they were married in Detroit. Details of the romance did not become generally known to Miss Gerwig’s friends until several days ago. Meantime her father, who had been in ill health was taken to Maryland University Hospital where he died Wednesday and the young bride was summoned home. The funeral will take place this afternoon.
Note: Elmer was born in Putnam County Indiana 6 Oct 1894 son of John P. and Ida (Parrish) Hurst.
