James Henry George, son of Isom J. and Samantha George was born in Putnam county Indiana Dec 31, 1834 departed this life, April 13, 1922, at the advanced age of 87 years 3 months 12 days. When three years of age death departed him of a mother's care. When 14 he was bereft of his father, leaving ghim without parental guidance love and benediction. He availed himself of every means of acquiring an education and at the age of 19, taught his first school. He continued in this profession almost a generation in Putnam, Boone and Hendricks Counties. He was married to Sarah J. Cox on Sept 14, 1852 and she walked with him in the most ardent devotion for a period of 67 years. Her death occurred May 20, 1922. He joined the Baptist Church in 1865 and in 1887 was ordained a minister. He engaged as a pastor with a very devoted religious zeal and supplied churches to Morgan, Marion and Hendricks Counties. In this period of ministerial work he served as clerk of the White Lick Baptist Association for 11 years. Some 20 years ago the hand of affliction was laid upon him which resulted in the loss of his right leg which disqualified him from active service. He served as justice of the peace the last 7 years of his life. In all his decisions in civil actions not one was reversed. he was made a Mason in Ladoga Lodge No 187, a number of years ago and he and his companion were members of an auxiliary organization which afterward led to the institution of the OES. He became affiliated with Pittsboro Lodge No. 620 about 12 years ago. He resided in this vicinity continually for almost 47 years. He was a mean well informed, unpretentious, of quiet disposition, firm in his convictions, did not seek to be exalted, but ever ready to contend for truth, morality and righteousness or any civic virtues that would give the community an uplift. he is survived by Rev. John George of Spokane, Wash, Henry George of Pittsburgh, PA; Dr. Judd George and Mrs. Willard Lowder of Indianapolis and Mrs. Nancy McDaniel and William S. George of Pittsboro. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church Sunday afternoon Rev SE Hayworth of Danville being in charge. Burial was in K of P cemetery, Lizton, the burial services being conducted by the Masons.
