Charles Gardner died at his home in Ladoga aged 37 years on SUnday of Bright's Disease. He leaves a wife and one child. Mrs. Gardner is the daughter of WM Darner. Charles Gardner was a young man of much excellence of character. For sevearl yearas he has been associated with WM Darter in the grain business. During the last two years they have in partnership in Ladoga. Thd body was brought to Crawfordsville on Monday and one Tuesday morning the funeral took place from the home of Mr. Darter and interment was at Oak Hill. Charles Gardner carried $2,100 in insurance in the order of Ben Hur - kbz

Charles A. Gardner, aged thirty seven years, died of Bright’s disease Sunday evening about five o’clock at his home in Ladoga. The body was brought to Crawfordsville Monday and taken to the residence of William M. Darter, on South Grant Avenue, from which the funeral occurred Tuesday morning at ten o’clock. Interment was at Oak Hill. C. A. Gardner was the son of John Gardner, of Russellville, and was a highly estimable young man. He was engaged in the grain business with his father-in-law, Mr. Darter, at Ladoga, removing to that place from Crawfordsville some months ago. Several years ago he was married to Miss Elizabeth Darter, who with one child survives him. Mr. Gardner was a member of the Tribe of Ben-Hur and had an insurance policy for $2,100 with that order. He was known as upright in business and as a man of excellent parts. The news of his death will be received with sincere sorrow and regret by those who knew him. -s

Greencastle, Ind June 9 – Charles Gardner arrived in this city last night from Kansas City and this morning made a sensational attempt at suicide. He had kept company with Miss Lizzie Branham before he left for the West and love had evidently grown cold between them. Gardner spent the night with a friend near the home of his old sweetheart and then went to her residence this morning. On the way he swallowed a quantity of morphine and after knocking at her door fell inside in an unconscious condition. All efforts to revive him were unavailing and tonight he is reported dying. Last winter his father and brother were killed by a fast express train on the edge of this city. Gardner is 26 years old. - kbz
Note: He was the son of John Wesley (& Nancy Busby who passed in 1897) who indeed was killed (27 Aug 1898) by the Knickerbocker Express. Charles’ brother Walter was with him and also instantly killed. Although a family of 11 Gardners shows on FindAGrave, Charles is not listed as one – wanted to find out if he made it or not so not sure ☹
