GALEY, Leonard - Putnam

Rev. Leonard F. Galey, who recently made his home in Waveland died in Crawfordsville, on Thursday afternoon of last week. Funeral services were held on Saturday morning by Rev. A.S. Mayhall, Roachdale, after which the body was taken to Indian Creek Cemetery for burial. Below is a sketch of his life which he had written some time before his death. Mrs. David Demaree is his only daughter.  Five grandchildren are Mrs. Hal Dronenberger and Mrs. Walter Himmelbauer of Terre Haute , Frank Demaree of Columbia Missouri, Carl Demaree of New Market and Mildred Demaree.

Leonard F. Galey was born in Montgomery County, Indiana, seven miles southwest of Crawfordsville on June 27, 1837. Died April 27, 1911, aged 73 years, 10 months after an illness of almost a year of organic heart disease. He lived on a farm until about 17 years of age after which he entered the high school at Waveland. After two yeares at school he taught for six years in the district schools in Montgomery County.

In the year 1858 he married Miss Elizabeth J. Ellis and to them one child, Mary Galey, now Mrs. David Demaree was born. In the year 1860 he united with the Baptist Church at Browns Valley. He served as deacon until 1883. Feeling it his duty to preach the gospel, he was licensed to preach wherever God in his providence might call him. In August 1886, the church at Maysville called for his ordination. A council was called to meet with the Browns Valley Church August 19, 1886. After a thorough examination the council decided to ordain him to the gospel ministry. He has preached for several churches in Freedom Association, also Tippecanoe, White Lick and the Monticello Association.
