FORGEY, Charles J. - Putnam

Charles J. Forgey, for the past forty-three years a highly respected farmer of the Calhan area, passed away January 30, 1941, at the age of 87 years. Death followed an illness of several weeks which culminated in pneumonia and put an end to an active, full and useful life.

Mr. Forgey was born at Russellville, Indiana, June 18, 1854. In 1870 he responded to the call of the west and when he struck the mountains of Colorado in what is now known as the Breckenridge district, decided to try his hand in the mines and timber camps of that territory. In 1883 he went to Albia, Iowa, where the girl of his choice was visiting and on July 4th of that year was married to Miss Ida Eda Akerly. They returned to the mountain country to reside, but in 1898 the family decided to try farming and moved to the Calhan area of El Paso County. In 1900 Mr. Forgey homesteaded the place now known as the Forgey farm and resided there to the time of his death. It was from this home that Mrs. Forgey preceded her husband to the Great Beyond, she passing on April 26, 1938.

Mr. Forgey is survived by one son and four daughters. A son, Jesse Forgey lost his life in the service of his country in 1918, and another son and a daughter passed on years ago. The survivors are: Carl Forgey of Cody, Wyoming; Mrs. Grace Roberts of Marietta, Georgia; Mrs. Lila Chase of Cody, Wyoming, and Ruth and Marion Forgey who reside here and have kept house for their father since the passing of Mrs. Forgey. There are also 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 Monday afternoon from the Calhan Methodist Church, with Rev. James Fletcher, the pastor conducting the services, assisted by the local Masonic Lodge of which the deceased was a member. Burial was beside the grave of his wife in Calhan Cemetery. The esteem in which Mr. Forgey was held was attested by the large gathering attending the service and following the remains to the resting place.

Two of the family, Mrs. Chase and Carl Forgey were unable to attend the funeral due to personal illness.
