ELLIOTT, John - 1897 - Putnam

Conductor John Elliott of the Vandalia local freight was painfully injured in the yards at Indianapolis this morning.  He jumped from the caboose of his own train and was struck by a passing shifter sustaining some severe bruised.    ~~~transcribed by kbz

Terre Haute Gazette – John Elliott, a conductor on local freight on the east end of the Vandalia was injured at Indianapolis at about 7 o’clock Friday morning and died from the injuries about 1 o’clock that afternoon.  The accident happened at the belt where there are numerous tracks.  Elliott stepped off his caboose onto the adjoining track and did not notice the approach of another train.  He was struck and one leg was cut off, his head was badly mashed and he was internally injured.  He was taken to his home in Indianapolis and a surgeon called in but the latter expressed little doubts as to his recovery.  Death resulted at 1:13 Friday afternoon.  John Elliott is an old-time railroad man and has been employed on the Vandalia for a long time.  Nearly everyone of the employees knows him.  He was a brother of NK Elliott formerly superintendent of the Vandalia.    ~~~transcribed by kbz
