Miss Mary Belle Denny, widely noun Greencastle woman, died suddenly while on a down-town shopping tour Thursday about one o’clock, she had just entered the J. C. Penny  store when stricken with an attack of heart trouble and died within a few minutes.  Miss Denney was the only child m to Mr. and Mrs. James T. Denny pioneer resident of Putnam County and Greencastle, both of them died several years ago. Miss Denny was a graduate of DePauw University with the class of 1897 and for many years had been identified with the alumni interests of the school.  For a number of years she had been associate editor of The Alumni News and The Alumnus, publications of the Alumni Association of the University and was probably as well known to former students as any graduate, because of her close association with the alumni.  It was often said of her that she knew the names of more graduates and former students of DePauw than anyone.  Miss Denny was born Nov 1, 1875 in Marion Township, Putnam County.  She completes post graduate work in DePauw in 1898-99. She taught German at Indianapolis, Latin and German in the high school at Rochester was engaged in secretarial work from 1905-1913 was instructor at Stetson University, Deland, Fla; was a teacher in the high school at Idaho Falls, Idaho; was at Stetson again the next year was in government service in 1916; was a teacher in the high school at Oregon, Ill and during a part of the world war period was a stenographer in the engineering department of the Division of Ordnance.  Miss Denny was a resigned member of the DAR and was a member of the Faculty Women’s Club of this city of the American Association of University Women of the Keystone Bible class and also of the Gobin Memorial Church of this city.  She assisted in receiving at the home of Mrs. Wildman last Monday at which members of the Faculty Women’s Club were guests and Tuesday afternoon she read a paper at the meeting of the AAUW.  She had been engaged in secretarial work in the administration office of DePauw since 1924, first in the office of the registrar and later in the alumni association office, being engaged in this latter work at the time of her death.   - kbz
