Valley, Iowa Times Thursday 28 March 1907 p 2
Again we are
called upon to chronicle the death of one of our olde
st and most respected
citizens, JH Crowder, who died in this city, Friday, March 22nd,
1907 at 11:15 a.m. of paralysis with which he was afflicted a few days ago and
from which he never rallied. He was in his 65th year, having been
born in Putnam County Indiana in 1841.
He was a member of the 18th Reg Indiana Vol. in the war of
the war, he came west and settled in Harrison County in 1866 and located in
Missouri Valley where he was employed by Messrs. Ellis Bros., in the dry goods
business and in 1871, he was appointed postmaster which position he held for
years, being one of the most efficient officers in the city ever had. He was
united in marriage to Miss Ella Brown in 1876.
Four children were born to them as follows: Mrs. Ray Noyes, Miss Anna,
Paul and Eleanor, who survive him, his wife having died a short time since. He
also has five brothers: OH; RH; JH; WH; and H. Crowder and a large circule of
friends who mourn his departure. For many years he has been in rather delicate
health but none supposed him in a dangerous condition and all hoped he would be
spared to his friends for many years yet, but age, and trouble over the
sickness of his departed wife, all combined to affect his physical condition
and when least expected, the shock came and he was unable to rally. Funeral
will be held at the home on 7th St, Sunday at 1:45 p.m. and burial
in Rose Hill Cemetery under the auspices of Mo. Valley Lodge No 232, AF&AM
to which all friends are invited to attend. - kbz
