DEATH CLAIMS JAMES CROSBY WAS OLDEST RESIDENT OF PUTNAM COUNTY

ROACHDALE – James E. Crosby, believed to be the oldest resident of Putnam County, died Wednesday morning at Putnam County Hospital. He would have been 97 years old on Nov. 20.

Mr. Crosby had planned to observe his 71st wedding anniversary Sunday. He and Laura Sutherland were married near Roachdale Sept. 18, 1889.

He was the last of a family of eight children and was preceded in death by one son. His parents were Elisha O. and Martha Miller Crosby.

A retired farmer, Mr. Crosby’s other activities included 52 years of Masonic work at Roachdale Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder for many years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert and Ralph Crosby of Roachdale, and a daughter, Mrs. Esther Wright of Roachdale.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. Thursday at the Perkins Funeral Home in Roachdale, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday with Rev. Leo Schmidt officiating. Burial will follow in the Roachdale Cemetery.
