Mary Alice Cox, died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Homer Wright in Anderson. The funeral was held Monday in Forest Hill cemetery. Mary Alice Evens Cox, the daughter of Oliver James Evans and Susan VanMeter Evens was born in Whitewater, Fayette County, Indiana June 18, 1850. Her early girlhood was spent in Fayette County. Her parents removed to Greencastle and later to Neoga, Illinois. James Evens her father taught in the pioneer schools of Indiana and Illinois. Under his guidance and teaching, she received her education and love for the beautiful in life. At the death of her father in 1868, the family returned to Greencastle, Indiana. April 15, 1869, she was united in marriage to Mellville Beveridge Cox, a Civil War soldier. Four daughters were born, Mrs. Minnie M. Wright, Putnam County; Mrs. Olive S. Wright, Anderson, Ind; Mrs. Effie L. Merrick, Anderson and Bonnibel Cox, who died April 11, 1905.  In the winter of 1868, she was converted in a revival meeting at the Old Beech Grove ME Church in Jefferson Township, Putnam County. She later transferred her membership to the Locust Street ME Church, Greencastle. “Ma” as she was lovingly known to her daughters and grandchildren was a lover of the fine and beautiful in life. After the death of her beloved daughter, Bonnibell, and her devoted husband, she found comfort and consolation in her Bible, beauty of nature, music and poetry. Her love and devotion for her family and friends was shown by her many thoughtful remembrances, gifts and letters.  Apparently in the best of health, she had arrangements made to return to her home in Greencastle but her heavenly Father called her home to the Eternal city.  She was stricken Saturday at 8 a.m. July 28, 1934 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Effie Merrick, Anderson and died at 1 p.m. age 84 years, 1 month and 10 days. She is survived by her daughters, Mrs. GW Wright, Mrs. Olive S. Wright and Mrs. Effie Merrick, 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; one brother, Mr. WN Evens, Cloverdale; two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Turner, Kellogg, Idaho; Mrs. Mae Russell, Louisville, KY and one stepsister, Mrs. Rebecca Besse, Illinois.
