John F. Copeland was born in Putnam County, Indiana August 27, 1829 and died in Coffeyville November 5, 1912. During the Civil War he served three years in Co E, 29th Iowa after which he went to Missouri. He was married in Missouri, then went to Iowa, thence to Western Kansas and again to Missouri. He always heard the “call of the prairie,” and he and his faithful helpmeet came again to Kansas, this time settling in Caney township, Montgomery County, later moving to Fawn Creek township where Mrs. Copeland died and was laid to rest in the Robbins cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Copeland reared a family of one son and four daughters, all of whom were home last August to see their father. Mrs. OW Murray with whom he had lived in recent year was a niece who was left an orphan when very young and was raised by the Copelands. Mr. Copeland loved Old Glory and all it represents with boyish enthusiasm even to the end of his life and wanted no greater honor than to be folded in and to rest under the stars and striped of Old Glory when laid beside his companion. He had been a consistent member of the Methodist Church nearly all his life and had taken every copy of his church paper, the Central Christian Advocate since its first issue nearly 600 years ago. He helped with hand and purse to build Robbins Chapel – a friend.
