James Russel Cofer, age 77, of Greencastle, passed away Tuesday evening, November 23, 1999 at the Putnam County Hospital. He was born in Rockville, IN, on August 11, 1922, the son of William V. and Inez (Fowler) Cofer. He was a graduate of Greencastle High School. Mr. Cofer had served in the United States Army during WW II.
He married L. Christine Pelfrey on September 28, 1946, and she preceded him in death April 16, 1992.
Mr. Cofer was employed at the General Motors Truck & Bus Plant in Indianapolis for 39 1/2 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the UAW Union and was an avid bowler having received the Greencastle Mens Bowling Assn. Hall of Fame Award in 1995.
Survivors include his son - Steven A. Cofer and wife, Janet, of Fillmore; two daughters - Linda Kay Puckett and husband, Frank of Abilene, TX, and Sheri L. Kendall and husband, Melvin of Greencastle; six grandchildren - Todd Puckett and wife, Shannon, of Myrtle Beach, SC, Mike Puckett, of Sheboygan, Wis., Jerrad Kendall and wife, Karin, of Rockville, Lya Crawley and husband, Joel, of Greencastle, Russel "Rusty" Cofer, of Rockville, and Mandy Cofer, of Fillmore; seven great grandchildren; a brother - Glen Eugene Cofer, of Lawrence, IN; and a sister - Verna June Frost, of Dunedin, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 27, at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home. Interment was made in the Forest Hill Cemetery, with full military honors.
