CARMICHAEL, William - Putnam

Coroner George P. Ramsey was called to Ladoga this (Tuesday) morning to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of William Carmichael, living a mile south of that town Monday evening. Carmichael was injured Saturday evening when in stepping from his own buggy he either fell or was run down by a vehicle which was being rapidly driven by at the time. Dr. Ramsey stated this afternoon, upon his return from Ladoga, that he had carefully looked into the matter and had concluded that there was no cause for holding an inquest. It is Dr. Ramsey's opinion that Mr. Carmichael fell when he alighted from his carriage and sustained injuries then which caused his death later.

There was considerable excitement in and around Laodga caused by Carmichael's death. The story was current that he had been run down by a team passing his home and that the driver or drivers did not stop to ascertain the extent of his injuries. He was carried into his house and a physician summoned. A deep gash had been inflicted in the back of his head and it is thought that he might have suffered fracture of the skull. He was unconscious until Monday morning and could only be around then by great effort. His face was also cut in the fall.

An effort was made to find out the names of the persons driving the rig which is alleged to have run Carmichael down but diligent inquiry failed to reveal their identity. When picked up by Fred Ashby and Clifford Clure who found him lying unconscious in the road, Mr. Carmichael's body was cold and it was thought he was dead then.

Mr. Carmichael was 55 years of age and is survived by a widow and three children. He had been employed on the Martin HIcks farm near Ladoga for some time past and was returning from his work Saturday when the accident occurred which later caused his death.

It is understood that Mr. Carmichael told the story of how the accident happened after he had been rescuscitated Monday and that his version of the incident was that he had been thrown to the ground by the rapidly driven team. - kbz

Ladoga, Ind Dec 12 -- A team, rapidly driven by unknown parties, ran down William Carmichael, 100 yards from his home, one mile south of Ladoga, at 7 o'clock Saturday night. He had just alighted from his rig and was crossing the road returning from the farm of Martin Hicks where he was employed. Some time later he was found by Fred Ashby and Clifford Clure of Ladoga. Carmichael was unconscious and his body cold. The men thought at first he was dead. They carried him to his home and Dr. Peacock was summoned. It was found that he had sustained a deep gash in the back of his head and a cut on the side of his face. Despite every effort of the physician, he could not be revived. He remained unconscious until Monday morning when he was resuscitated. Then he told as best he could recall the incident, how he was hurt. Although he regained consciousness he did not appear as well this mmroning. Grave fear for his recovery is entertained. Mr. Carmichael is 55 years of age and has a wife and three children. - typed by kbz

William Carmichael, one of our most respected citizens, died in Indianapolis Friday after a long and painful illness. The body was brought here and funeral services conducted Sunday. Interment at Rockville.  - kbz
