CARMICHAEL, Martha Spencer

Source: Greencastle Herald 25 March 1912

Once more the grim reaper, Death, has appeared in our midst and removed from among us one who shall be greatly missed. There is no earthly power that can stay the strong hand of Death; the most that we can do is to make the necessary preparation for the future life as we feel and believe that Sister Carmichael has done.  Martha Jane Spencer was born at Portland Mills, Ind Sept 17, 1849 and died in Parke County Ind March 18, 1912 at the age of 62 years six months one day.  She was married to Asbury Carmichael Aug 10, 1871.  To this union was born four children: John, Leuvence, Elsie and Rosa. Three of these, John, Leuvence and Della preceded their mother in death many years ago. She joined the United Brethren Church at Beech Grove under the first pastorage of Rev. GW Wiley and has lived a faithful and consistent Christian life ever since. She was an affection wife, loving mother, a kind and obliging neighbor, ever ready with kind hands to bring blessings to the weary and discouraged hearts and to willingly minister to those in sickness and affliction.  The value of life is not measured by years alone, but by the outflowing of the heart’s affections and the life of Sister Carmichael was rich in good deeds and loving acts. While her body was laid away to rest, her influence will live on in the hearts and lives of others. She leaves to mourn an aged husband, two daughters, two brothers, one sister, other relatives and a host of friends. We are sad, our dearest mother, As we weeping say good-bye; Thou art gone, but we shall meet thee, In the land beyond the sky. Thou art gone and we shall miss thee, Miss thy kind and loving hand, But we turn with hope and longing To that bright and heavenly land. Text: The memory of the just is blessed – Proverbs 10:7. Scripture Lessons: I Corinthians 15: 35-58.
