Funeral service for Prof. AF Caldwell of DePauw University who died suddenly Saturday afternoon in the Putnam County Hospital of a heart attack will be Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock in his home on Elm Street.  Bishop Edwin Holt Hughes, former president of DePauw.  Rev. Albert E. Monger, pastor of the Methodist Church and Dr. Salem B. Towne will conduct the services.  The final resting place for the body of Prof. Caldwell has not been decided pending the arrive of his sisters husband who will come to Greencastle tonight.  Rev. WC Callahan of New Albany, a nephew, arrived here Saturday shortly after the death of his uncle.  The body will probably be taken to Oxford Maine, his birthplace.  Prof. Caldwell has been an instructor in DePauw for 277 years and was outranked in years of service by only three members of the faculty: Dr. Edwin Post; Dean emeritus; Dr. Henry B. Longden, VP and Dr. WM Blanchard, dean of Liberal Arts College.  He was James Whitcomb Riley Professor of English Literature and head of that department.  Prof. Caldwell had been ill for the past two years but following an operation it was believed he was rapidly recovering and he was occasionally teaching a class in his department.  A relapse came two weeks ago when he suffered an attack of heart disease and was removed from his home to the hospital.  His condition was critical.  Death came suddenly Saturday afternoon about 2:15 o’clock and word reached the DePauw campus while hundreds of alumni were seated at the tables in the Bowman gymnasium for the annual alumni banquet. The news of his death cast a pall over the remainder of the commencement activities.  --- transcribed by  kbz
