March 12 – William S. Burris, 80 years old, former Putnam County commissioner
died at his home here early yesterday. Funeral rites will be held tomorrow
morning at 10:30 o’clock from the Reed Funeral Home. One of Putnam County’s prominent citizens,
Mr. Burris served as county commissioner from 1895 to 1901. Throughout most of his life he had farmed 750
acres of the best land in the county, specializing in Shorthorn cattle, Duroc
hogs, Oxford Down sheep and Percheron horses. Born in Putnam County in
Jefferson Township on Feb 17, 1863, he attended the schools in his home
community. Following high school graduation he took the commercial course and
the teachers’ course at Central Normal College, Danville, Ind. In 1885 he
purchased his first farm one of 160 acres. Since 1905 Mr. Burris had resided in
Cloverdale. Mr. Burris is survived by
his widow, one daughter, two granddaughters and one great granddaughter. - kbz
