James Magee Bucklin died Saturday afternoon at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Keating on South Jackson Street of old age, 88 years. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1802 and was education at Brown University. He moved to Baltimore thence to Lexington, KY where his father was the first Mayor of that city. His profession was civil engineers and he was Assistant Engineer of the Louisville and Portland canal, afterward becoming the Chief Engineer of the Illinois and Michigan canal. He had charge of the survey of Chicago and staked off the boundaries of that city in 1830. He was also Superintendent of the General Internal Improvements of Illinois and located several of the leading railroads of the State. Two children survive him James Bucklin of Brazil and Mrs. Keating of this city. The funeral will occur at 2 o’clock this afternoon at the residence and the remains will be placed in the vault at Forest Hill Cemetery. - kbz
