BUCKLES, Anna Phelps - Putnam

With only a few moments’ warning death came to Mrs. Leander C. Buckles at 7 o’clock last evening at her home 1402 Columbia Street.  She had eaten supper with her husband and sisters, Mr. MM Dunbar and after assisting with the dishes complained that she was not feeling well and she would retire.  She went to her sleeping apartment and was disrobing when a sudden attack of heart trouble seized her.  She gasped and sank to the floor before her husband, Dr. LC Buckles could reach her side and prevent her from falling.  Drs. Westfall and Arnett were summoned, but life was extinct before they arrived.  Her heart had been afflicted for several years, but had never given her serious trouble and her death was a great shock to her relatives and friends.  Mrs. Buckles was born in Stanbridge, Can Dec 25, 1841 and her maiden name was Anna J. Phelps.  She was married to the Rev. Buckles in Michigan City nearly 50 years ago and came to Lafayette in 1891 when her husband was appointed presiding elder of the Lafayette District of the Northwest Indiana ME Conference and had lived here since with the exception of 3 years when her husband had charges at Dayton and other points.  Before coming to Lafayette Dr. Buckles had been presiding elder of the Greencastle district with residence in Greencastle and held charges in Michigan City, Valparaiso, Plymouth, Terre Haute, Thorntown and other cities.  He was pastor of the Michigan City Church three times and his son Charles is buried in that city.  Mrs. Buckles was a woman of noble character, refined and cultured and as a Christian woman her life was a blessing and benediction.  She was active in missionary work and other forms of church work.  Her beautiful character was an influence for good to all within its sphere.  She was gracious in her manner and possessed a pleasing personality.  She is survived by her husband and one daughter, Mrs. Clarence P. White of this city and by two sisters and two brothers.  One sister, Mrs. Eliza March lives in Swanton, VT and the other sister, Mrs. Dunbar lives in this city.  One brother, William Phelps lives in Los Angeles and the other, Elmer lives at Swanton, VT.  Short services will be held at the residence of Clarence P. White, 1422 Main Street, tomorrow morning at 7:45 o’clock and the remains will be taken to Michigan City at 8:45 o’clock.  Final services will be held in the Methodist Church there tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o’clock and interment will be in the Michigan City Cemetery.  Friends may review the remains at the White home.  Dr. HA Gobin of Greencastle assisted by other ministers, will officiate.   ~~~Transcribed and Typed by kbz
