Mrs. Mary Jane Brown, who had been in such poor health for several months, died at her home on East street Sunday morning. She had suffered with a tumor for a long time and since the death of her son, Lanville, last October she has declined rapidly. She was born in Bath county, Kentucky, February 27, 1826, and was consequently over seventy-four years of age. She was the widow of Captain John Brown who died December, 1896, and to whom she married September 1, 1846. They resided on a farm in her native county until March, 1863, when they moved to Putnam county and lived on a farm about twelve miles north of Greencastle until October 6, 1881. They then came to Lebanon, where she has since resided in the enjoyment of the respect of the community.
The deceased was the mother of ten children, only three of whom are living. They are James C., Henry T. and Mary L., all of whom reside in Lebanon. She was a life long member of the Presbyterian church and was a faithful adherent to its principles. She was devoted to her family and was of a quiet and unassuming nature.
The funeral was conducted at the Presbyterian church by Rev. D.A. Williamson Monday afternoon and the interment took place at Oak hill cemetery. Six of her grandchildren, young men, acted as pall-bearers: Arthur, Irwin, and Walter Brown, of this city, John Sutherland, of Ladoga, and Charles and Rosco Young of Roachdale. Edgar Sutherland and Hattie Brown, also grandchildren, carried the floral offerings - kbz
