John Allison Brown was born in Nicholas county, Ky., January 15, 1822. Here he grew to manhood's estate and on September 1, 1847, married Mary Jane Moffett. After his marriage Mr. Brown settled in Bath county, on a farm where he remained for sixteen years. In 1861 Mr. Brown was sent to Frankfort Ky., by his Union neighbors, for troops to protect them. He was informed by Gov. Robinson that he had no soldiers, but if he would raise a company the state would provide muskets and ammunition. The muskets were forwarded and Mr. Brown raised a company of one hundred men for home guard services, and took an active part in keeping peace in his county. In 1862 Capt. Brown raised a company in Bath and Morgan counties, which he commanded from May until September. They engaged in battle at Cynthian, Ky., in August 1862, with Gen John Morgan, and the entire command was captured. Capt. Brown was confined with 400 other prisoners in the court house at Cynthian, this exposure resulting in pneumonia, from which he never fully recovered. Capt. Brown received no re numeration for his services, and lost two good horses in the campaign.
Because of the feeling against him on account of his sympathy with the Union cause. Capt. Brown left Kentucky in March 1863, locating in Putnam county, this state. He was successful in management of the farm he bought, and accumulated a goodly fortune. In October 1881, he came to Lebanon, retiring from active life.
In politics Capt. Brown was an uncompromising Republican. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and the Masonic fraternity. His aged companion and the following children survive: Jas C., Henry T., Lanville A., and Harriett L. Brown, of this city.
The funeral took place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, conducted by Rev. D.H. Williamson. The Masons had charge of the services in the cemetery.
