BLACK, Columbus R.

Source: Greencastle Banner 7 Dec 1882 p 5

Columbus R. Black, who during the past four months had been a victim of consumption, left here about two weeks since for Bainbridge, Florida in the hope of obtaining relief.  His brother, Rev Edwin Black accompanied him.  Within 25 miles of his destination he became so much worse that he was compelled to stop and seek rest.  As soon as he was better they started on their return home as Mr. Black was convinced by this tie that he must die.  Arriving at the north depot shortly after midnight, Sunday he was placed in a carriage to be taken to the residence of Conrad Cook, a relative and had arrived at a point of the road opposite the residence Rezin Hammon when it was discovered that he was in extreminity. The carriage was stopped but in a few minutes all was over and the sufferer had found relief in death.  The funeral took place from the Presbyterian Church of which he had been a member since early manhood Thursday afternoon.  He left two sons, aged 4 and 6 years who are at present in the car of Mrs. C. Cook.  Mr. Black was united in marriage to Miss Maggie Matson, daughter of the late John A. Matson 7 years since and she died last year with the same dread disease – consumption. Mr. Black’s age was 44 years.  He entered the Confederate service during the war and sacrificed an arm for that cause.  Of late years he had been in the  employ of Cole Bros and was highly regarded by all who knew him being a quiet and courteous gentleman.   ---kbz
