Source: Greencastle Banner 7 Dec 1882 p 5

Alexander Black died Tuesday of last week and was buried Thursday.  He was in his 80th year.  Mr. Black came here from Montgomery County KY about 50 years since, first settled in North Putnam but soon afterward located on a farm which he bought just west of the city. In early life he joined the Presbyterian Church and was ever after a devoted Christian.  He was noted for his honesty and it is said of him that he never uttered a falsehood or wronged anyone out of a cent.  He had been married twice, and his second wife survives him.  He also left his second wife survives him.  He also left several children – Edwin a minister of the Presbyterian Church in Illinois; Mrs. Carie Waltz; Robert, a farmer near Terre Haute; Columbus since dead and Asa a farmer near Danville.  Mr. Black was a  man of great vigor and he would have lived several years yet had it not been that he was kicked by a mule some years again breaking his hip and confining him to his bed for more than a year.  This fall, while in the city, he received a fall which fractured the other hip.  He never rallied from the shock but continued to gradually fail until he at last passed away.   ---kbz
