Marietta Elizabeth Birch, 82. died at her home 302 Bloomington street, last night, Mrs. Birch haj been an invalid for a number of years as a result of a paralytic stroke. While enjoying good health, Mrs. Birch was a very active member of College Avenue M. E. Church and of various clubs of the city, especially “The Wo. man’s Club. She died in the home where she had spent more than fifty years of her life. Marietta Elizabth Jones Birch, daughter of Minor and Mary Ann Jones was born August 23, 1839 in Vigo Co., near Prairieton, Ind Her parents moved to Greencastle when she was seven years of age, for the purpose of educating the children three sons and one daughter. Her early education was received at the private school of Mrs. Larrabee at Rosa Bower. Later she attended the Indiana Asbury Female Institute from which she was graduated On February 7th, 1871 she was united in marriage to major Jonathan Birch at Greencastle Two daughters were born, Grace Washburn, and Mary Katharine who survive. A niece Marietta Jones Sherrod of El Paso, Texas daughter of David W. Jones a beloved brother, also survives. After her husband’s death April 9th, 1906, Mrs. Birch continued to reside in Greencastle but spent much time away from here with her daughters who were engaged in teaching. The *\last two years were spent at her home in Greencastle where her death occurred May 20th, 1921, Funeral services were conducted at the home Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock Funeral services for Mrs. Marietta Elizabeth Birch were held at the home 302 Bloomington street, this afternoon at 3 o’clock Rev. Henry L. Davis, pastor of the College Avenue church conducted the services. Mrs. C. W Otis sang. Interment was made in Forest Hill cemetery. The pall bearers were: James Denny. Charles Talbott, S. A Hays, John R Miller, Walter Ashton and Sam Brumley.
