Mrs. Margaret
Cecil Baker, wife of John W. Baker, passed away at 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon
at the family home, 908 South 185h Street. Mrs. Baker had been in failing
health for four years, following a stroke of paralysis. During that time she
had been an invalid and during the last few months she had gradually grown
worse. Funeral services will probably be held Tuesday afternoon from the
Methodist Episcopal church, conducted by Rev. Thomas B. Lugg. The body will be placed in a crypt in the
mausoleum in Dodge Grove cemetery. Mrs. Baker, as Margaret Cecil was born in
Putnam County, Indiana near Greencastle in September 1850, a daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. HH Cecil. At the age of 13 she came with her parents to Coles County
and settle don a farm about six miles south to Charleston. There she grew to
womanhood and became the bride of John W. Baker on March 26, 1868. They would have celebrated their 64th
wedding anniversary next month. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Baker
lived on a farm south of Charleston a few years later going to a farm east of
Dorans, in Humbolt Township where they resided many years. About 33 years ago
they came to Mattoon to make their home having lived at the present address
about 15 years. Surviving are the husband, and 9 children, Henry Baker, Denver,
Colo ; Mrs. Mary Trower, Peevers, SD; Mrs. Hannah Brown; John W. Baker Jr and
Sherman Baker, all of near Creston, Iowa; Mrs. May Cheevers, Coles Station and
Mrs. Matilda Keepes, Mrs. Cora McGaughey and Ray Baker, all of Mattoon. There are 49 grandchildren and 25 great
grandchildren. Mrs. Baker has two brothers, Henry Cecil of Williston ND and
