Winston Ashby, 15 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Ashby, near Roachdale, Ind., is dead here today, a victim of a drowning. The youth lost his life Friday while swimming in Lake Michigan off the Lee street beach. Shouting to a companion, Virden Moore, that he was in distress, young Ashby suddenly disappeared from view. His companion finally succeeded in attracting the attention of Miss Cleo Martin, a bather at the beach. In his efforts to rescue Ashby, Moore became exhausted. Miss Martin succeeded in holding Moore's head above water until a lifeguard could arrive and complete the rescue. Young Ashby, however was drowned with the girl bather apparently unaware of his presence in the water. Both Ashby and Moore were guarded as good swimmers and it is thought that the chill northwest wind blowing over the lake caused the drowned lad to become exhausted. The wind at the time was strong and the water choppy.
