Hurled from the wreckage of his light roadster as it was in headon collision with a heavy truck, Frank Ashby, Greencastle, was injured fatally near Bridgeport Friday night. He was driving on National Road apparently on his way home when the accident occurred. The truck was driven by Harry Zeisig and William Fouts, Akron, O. They said Ashby swerved his car slightly as he approached and they were unable to avoid a wreck. The truck went into a ditch 100’ away. Deputy Sheriffs Thomas, Cook, Kassenbrock and Gatto investigated. They said they found a bottle partly filled with liquor in Ashby’s car. Zeizig was ordered held on technical charge of involuntary manslaughter and Fouts was charged with vagrancy as a witness. Sheriff Alva Bryan of Putnam County was in Indianapolis today where he attended a coroner’s inquest into the death of Ashby. The man was positively identified by Sheriff Bryan. An uncle of Ashby is said to reside near Mt. Meridian. The sheriff said today that Ashby was under suspicion of stealing a number of chickens in the county and that he had been investigating the man’s record of some time. Ashby at one time served a sentence at the Indiana State Farm at Putnamville on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of liquor. He was sentenced from the Marion criminal court. Greencastle authorities said today that Ashby had no regular residence but has been in Greencastle on numerous occasions. His parents are said to reside near Indianapolis. - kbz
