Much surprise and genuine sorrow was expressed here Friday evening when word came that the Rev. Wm. Appley, pastor of the ME Church in Montmorenci had died suddenly at his home in that city. He had seemed to be in his usual health and had gone about his duties until afternoon when he complained of severe pain. A physician was summoned and the pain abated Later he turned on his side and immediately expired. Wm. Appleby was born in Putnamville, Indiana March 17, 1855. In his younger days he was a school teacher and carpenter, teaching in the winter and working at the carpenter's trade in the summer. While engaged in this trade at Rossville, Indiana, he met with a severe accident which incapacitated him for a year and resulted in permanent lameness. All these years he had felt a call to the ministry but had not heeded it. After recovering form his accident he entered the theological department of DePauw University from which he graduated 25 years ago. He then entered the ministry. In 185? he was married to Alice Conrad of Kirkpatrick. Two children were born to them; Charline, who is a teacher of mathematics in the South Bend HS and Wilmer who died last August. Besides his wife and daughter he is survived by two brothers, Madian and Charles Appleby and two sisters Emma and Leona Appleby. Rev. Appleby was widely known in Darlington and vicinity. For some years he lived with his sister, Mrs. EH Cox who passed away last summer. He was here for Decoration Day but two weeks ago. Little did his friends and relatives think that they would never again see his smiling face and feel his hearty hand clasp. Monday morning an impressive funeral service was held at the ME Church in Montmorenci. It was conducted by Rev. UG Leazenby and was largely attended. Monday afternoon at 1:30 the funeral party arrived here coming overland in autos. A second service was held in the ME Church. This was in charge of Rev. WE McKinzie, superintendent of the Lafayette district. He was assisted by other ministers who were close friends of Rev. Appleby. A quartette composed of Rev. Martin, Mrs. Bert Hiatt & Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Wessner sang Sometime We'll Understand, Lead Kindley Light and Rock of Ages. The pall bearers were Byron and Denton Cox, Still Imel, WA Burgin, Willard Craig & Ed Little all nephews of the deceased. Many friends and neighbors accompanied the family to Darlington. The following ministers attended the service; Rev. Jonet of Hillsboro, Tremain of Waynetown, Beisel of Boswell, Engles of Colfax, Cones of Tennessee, HC Riley of Newtown, WG Miller of Lizton, HH Dunlavy, EW Dunlavy & WE McKinzie of Lafayette, TG Howard of Mulberry and WH Nicely of this city.
