Capt. William W. Allen, who has been sick for some time, died at his residence three miles north of the city yesterday evening at 8 o’clock of a complication of diseases arising from the grippe.  He was born in Clarke County KY Oct 28, 1826; married Mary Evans May 17, 1847 and removed to Indiana the following October, settling on or near his present farm.  Six brothers and sisters survive him.  Edgar Allen of California, Mrs. Capt. Smiley of this city, Mrs. Daniel Evans and Mrs. Fred Garner of Russellville and Robt. W. Allen and JM Allen of this county.  A wife and 11 children mourn the loss of a kind husband and indulgent father.  His children are Mrs. Thomas Brant of Nebraska; Joseph; Dillard; John; Myrtle and Effie Allen who reside at home; William Allen of Florida; Marion Allen, Nebraska; Mrs. Ol Kern of Cedar Valley, Illinois; and Mrs. Albert Albaugh and Mrs. Dr. Baker.  Mr. Allen was not a member of any religious denomination.  He acted as auctioneer in this vicinity for over 30 years and genial “Bill” Allen was known and liked everywhere in Putnam County.  Four years ago he was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for County Auditor, but withdrew before the primary election.  He will be sadly missed in this community and a host of friends mourn his loss.  The funeral has been postponed until the arrival of relatives from Nebraska.   ~~~Transcribed and Typed by kbz
